wESTSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL

MAKER SPACE PROJECT PRESENTATION (AS PRESENTED AT THE smp/same cOMPETITION)

SMP/SAME

The intention of the program is introduce the field of engineering to students and engage them in critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems in the community. The students in the WMS SMP group decided to tackle the issue of creativity is schools, not one generally associated with engineering. The students took a room in the school and transformed that room with the help of architects and engineers into a usable creative space. The students wrote grants to fund their work, took research trips to discover new ideas and met with roadblocks along the way. All in all, their endeavors were very productive and are here today to show you their results.

All members of the group are 8th graders at Westside Middle School - they have presented this project to the All Minds Matter conference at Midland University, the SAME/SMP competition and will present at NETA later in April.

  • Kelly Kroeger is project manager, she came to me with the initial ideas to take over the space, she recruited her team and has been instrumental in making this a success.
  • Eva Collins is the DIYer of the group, she is the idea person of what we can do with limited funds and random stuff. She and Kelly are the motivators of the group.
  • Thomas Lundin is the artist and creative personality of the group. He is a natural designer and creator and has brought the creativity to the project.
  • Theo is the analytical thinker of the group, often the task manager and presentation guru!
  • Kristen Job is their Excellence in Youth Coordinator (High ability learner program) my job is to introduce very smart students to the world outside  of the classroom. I aim to give students experiences that will help shape their learning in new and exciting ways.
