Leavenworth Lift Station Facility Description

This project is an outcome of the City of Omaha’s CSO Program, which is meeting increased requirements of the Federal Clean Water Act.  The Program strives for regulatory compliance, economic affordability and community acceptance.

The existing Leavenworth Lift Station at 1st and Leavenworth Street was constructed in the early 1960s with the existing South Interceptor Force Main and other conveyance facilities along the Missouri River. The existing lift station has an operating capacity of 17 million gallons per day (MGD).

The new facility was constructed under two separate contracts:
  • Contract 1 (Site): January – July 2012, final cost $944k
  • Contract 2 (facility): Aug 2012 – Feb 2015; cost $28,500,000

The new facility includes screening and grit removal and has the capacity to pump approximately 7 MGD during dry weather conditions and 45 MGD during wet weather conditions.

In addition to pumping flows from the Leavenworth Street Sewer, the new Leavenworth Lift Station will also handle flows diverted from the Pierce Street and Hickory Street Basins. Both the Pierce Street Lift Station and Hickory Street Lift Station will be decommissioned after the facility is functional.

The lift station is located south of the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge that crosses the Missouri River at 302 Pierce Street.

The tour will be led by:

Bob Riede served as the Leavenworth Lift Station project design manager and serves as the construction manager for the project,

Scott Aurit serves at the CSO Program Major Projects Team Lead.
